I recall writing a piece last year, on one of the most important questions of modern dating: To Tinder or Not to Tinder? Fast-forward to 2016, Tinder’s popularity has skyrocketed and is now the leading online dating app. Slowly but surely, its hookup stigma is eroding and making way for its recognition as a legitimate dating platform. Beating out the major players such as eHarmony and Matchmaker, Tinder’s now the go-to for majority of the single-and-ready-to-mingle young adult demographic.

While some lament over the lost art of the direct in-person approach, I think much should be said about staying relevant and current with the times. Remember this phrase: Evolve or Dissolve. I understand doubters are quick to note that chivalry is dead and how apps such as Tinder glorify the hookup culture. But here’s the single question I pose for all parties involved: “What is your intent on Tinder?”

Basically, your intent is the framework and personal style that reinforces your entire approach with women. Sure it runs amuck with all sorts of interests: dating, exclusive relationships, casual, one-night stands, friends with benefits etc. Successful Tinderers, however, know how to navigate through all these options, because they are absolutely certain of their intent.

If you’ve been on Tinder for more than 60 seconds, I’m sure you’re already familiar with the above. Also, “what are you looking for?” seems to be the most popular opener in these Tinder streets, as it steers the dialogue in an either promising direction or not.

Without establishing your intent, you’re left wavering and might find yourself in the pitfalls of Tinder which can be very unforgiving and heartbreaking.  The beauty of Tinder is, once you’ve had that honest conversation about your intent, it drives your approach in adopting different frames and styles of interaction. I’ll touch on the best ways to interact on Tinder following a match. Until then, then keep swiping right till you find the right one!
