Hey, Ward…

I see the pompadour is back. I’d love some tall hair, but can’t seem to pull it off. My hair isn’t thinning, but it won’t stay up and in place. How can I get some air in my hair?

If you’re not getting your hair “high and tight”, it’s likely that the product you’re using. A cheap hair gel isn’t going to have the desired effect. They’re usually too watery to really get the trick done, and only wind up making your hair look wet and stiff. I’m not saying you have to spend fifty bucks, but drop a few extra bills and get a nice matte pomade or clay. Both will give you volume and shine without looking greasy and wet. Also, the hold is better. Start by adding a mousse before you blow dry your hair so that it has some extra volume. Then add the product. I tend to use American Crew’s Hair Fiber. Work a small amount into your hands (too much will make it harder to tame), and push your hair up and over. Then (yes, men) spray your coif with a firm hold hairspray. Just don’t go ruining it with a hat.
