Q: Hey, Ward: I’m looking for a watch I can keep for years. Maybe even pass on to a son (or daughter) one day. I don’t have the budget for a Rolex. Anything more affordable that will last just as long?

A: You don’t have the budget for a watch that costs as much as an economy car? Join the club. Don’t be fooled by what you have overheard the Fat Cats at the bank saying when it comes to timepieces these days. There are plenty of great watches from those experts The Swiss that you can find on pretty much any budget. And, with proper maintenance and care, some can last until you’re ready to pass them on to Junior as he graduates University.

Hamilton famously dressed Elvis Presley in their Ventura timepiece in the 1961 movie Blue Hawaii. That style is still available, in various forms, and can be bought with either a leather, rubber, or steel band. It’s a beautiful timepiece and will ding your wallet far less than other watches not nearly as—ahem—timeless.

Personally, I’ve always been a fan of Tissot. This Swiss watchmaking company has been around since 1853 and they are known for their classic styles, from gorgeous luxury watches with durable leather bands to classy-yet-sporty everyday chronograph automatics. Again, these are beautiful timepieces that will catch eyes without breaking the bank, and come from one of the most trusted names in watchmaking.
